Dr. Cathy Slavik

Cathy Slavik is a Banting Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Courtesy Research Associate at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. She is broadly interested in health risk education, drawing from the behavioural sciences, health communications, geographic information sciences and other fields to develop evidence-based health risk communication tools. At the UO, her research will explore how people process information from geographic maps and how maps can be used to influence risk comprehension and decision making.

Cathy previously worked as a Research Associate with the Occupational Cancer Research Centre at Cancer Care Ontario, where she investigated occupational and environmental exposures to cancer-causing agents across Canada. This work sparked her research interests in health risk education and communication, especially for improving cancer risk messaging. She received her Ph.D. from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario.
